Jillian Michelle Jones - Modern Sculptor
Jillian Jones grew up in the small Texas town of Inez, she is the daughter of Roy and Lisa Jones and has 2 sisters, Jocelyn Smith and Jordin Jones, and a brother Jaylen Jones. Throughout her high school years she was interested in art and by her junior year she decided she wanted to make a career out of it. She came to Ouachita Baptist University on a Softball Scholarship and got her bachelor’s degree in Studio art with a minor in Psychology. She will pursue her master’s degree in architecture, and then get a job in a related field.
I resonate with the Working class very heavily. Coming from a rural town in south Texas, most of my family and friends are made up of this class. The hardworking nature and the willpower that comes the people that work to build our society is inspiring and I hope to convey that through my work.
I will be getting my Masters degree in Architecture from The University of Texas at San Antonio, with the ambition to create sustainable buildings for all parts of the society and to put my style into each and every design. While obtaining the masters degree, I will continue my work in sculpture and to feed these creative processes.
My portfolio is the embodiment of cold and detached, but can resonate with representation of the modern day, working class person. The cold and distantness comes from the minimalistic design and in color. Mundane, utilitarian objects, such as bricks and cinder blocks, are used by the working class, and brings me back to my upbringing and seeing these objects being used every day. These structures are also influenced by architects of the Roman Era that emphasize the repeating arches. The arches allow the buildings to soften and welcome the audience in. With my sculptures I do not want to dictate what is felt by my audience only to help to find what these sculptures will spark within themselves. The therapeutic processes of building these structures are the main reason I have continued. Building has always been an outlet for me. Using my hands to get the materials to do exactly what I am wanting allows me to have more control over the process and the outcome then it would in painting and drawing.
